Work Description:
This color slide depicts an installation view of the exhibition “American Art at Mid-Century 1” at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. David Smith's sculpture "The Banquet" (1951, cropped) appears at the left edge of the frame. Franz Kline's "New Year Wall: Night" (1960) occupies the partition in the middle ground, while a portion of Clyfford Still's PH-115 (1951, cropped) is situated on an additional partition in the background. To the right, Philip Guston's "The Mirror" (1957) is on display on the far back wall of the gallery. Proceeding clockwise, Sam Francis’s “Red in Red” (1955, cropped), Mark Rothko’s “Untitled” (1954, cropped), James Brooks's "Number 42 - 1950" (1950, cropped), and Richard Pousette-Dart's "Symphony No. 1, The Transcendental" (1942, cropped) line the wall to the right. On view October 28, 1973 through January 6, 1974, the exhibition featured twenty-six paintings and sculptures by twenty-three American artists. The presentation of these works demonstrated the diverse artistic styles of post-World War II New York. Frederick and Marcia Weisman loaned PH-115 from their collection of Still's artwork to appear in the exhibition.
