Work Description:
This file contains correspondence between M. Knoedler and Co. LLC (specifically Martin Jennings, John Rogers, and Lawrence Rubin) and Clyfford Still. The file starts with Jennings writing Still to request to purchase a painting for a client, of which no response is given. Later, John Rogers reaches out to Clyfford Still about works on paper, specifically to have some of Still's works on paper in an exhibition, which Still declines because he doesn't do group shows. Rogers understands and suggests a one-man show in the future, which Still is also reluctant on, but agrees to meet Rogers for lunch in 1976. Rogers hopes to purchase a work on paper as he cannot afford an oil painting, but Patricia Still tells Rogers he is not selling anything from his collection as he'd like to keep it intact, Roger understands and sends the serial "Tracks: A Journal of Artists' Writings" for the Stills amusement. In 1978 Lawrence Rubin contacts the Stills about unnamed projects they have discussed upon their meeting. Rubin hopes to purchase and sell Still's paintings, but understands Still's reluctance to work with a commercial gallery. Still and Rubin discuss the Metropolitan Museum of Art retrospective and the plans for that show. Rubin is trying to connect Still with Dr. Hammer and needs to know if Dr. Hammer's financial advisor should be present in meeting Still. Still and Rubin correspond on meeting for a meal over in late 1978 or early 1979. The following correspondence is primarily courtesy letters between Rubin and Still about meeting in person and about the Metropolitan Show. Rubin sends his condolences upon Still's death. Finally, there is an article from House and Garden about Lawrence Rubin.
