Work Description:
This file contains correspondence between artist Hassel Smith and Patricia Still. This file starts with a letter from Patricia Still to Smith about how she is now the executor of Still's estate and that PH-15 is being moved from the Oakland Museum to a new location. Smith discusses Museum of Lautrec in France, a single artist museum dedicated to Lautrec and how it could serve as a model for the Clyfford Still Museum, he continues on the circumstances of PH-15 and his disappointment in the stewardship of the Oakland Museum. Patricia discusses the complications of Clyfford Still's will, but expresses her desire to create a museum as a shrine to Still. Smith sends catalogs of his work and notes and invitations of exhibitions of his work. Smith continues to update Still on his life. He presents the idea to establish a scholarship or fellowship in Clyfford's name, likely at the San Francisco Art Institute (formerly California School of Fine Arts) or in England at the England School of Art. Smith includes some photographs of himself. Smith continues to tell Patricia about his painting and the exhibitions and Artists in Residence that he participates in. Smith updates Still on his health troubles, and discusses the importance of Clyfford Still, and the value that the Clyfford Still Museum will provide to young artists. Still discusses her frustration on the lack of momentum on the Clyfford Still Museum, but discusses how the Albright-Knox and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art Stills are going on a travelling show through Europe including Basel, Amsterdam, Madrid, and Germany. Still also discusses the health concerns of Diane Still and the death of George Rocha, Diane's son. Smith looks forward to seeing the Stills on tour in Europe and hopes to see Patricia at an opening. Smith plans on meeting at the Madrid and is invited to the opening of Kunsthalle Basel as well. Everyone (Patricia, Sandra, Diane, and the Smiths) cancel their plans for Madrid, but Smith will go to the Amsterdam opening, but Patricia tells Smith that the Royal Academy was added to the tour. Smith's son Mark attends the Madrid opening and spoke highly of the show. The Royal Academy fails to raise funds for the Still show, so that show is cancelled. Smith congratulates Still on the European and United States tour of Still's paintings. Smith sees two Stills at the Royal Academy in 1993, he feels it isn't the best choice of Still paintings for a show, but appreciates being able to see them. Smith announces that he is doing a show in San Francisco and looks forward to meeting Diane Still there. Smith and Still discuss their ailments (Patricia Still suffered a stroke, Smith has been diagnosed with a disease that confined him to a wheelchair), but Smith discusses how Clyfford Still taught him to paint to the best application he can despite any restrictions he may have. Finally, there are some undated materials, including a letter to Lillian Still about how much Smith does not respect Barnett Newman and a class Smith taught in San Fransisco sponsored by Clyfford Still.
