Work Description:
This typed manuscript mirrors the artist's statement published in the catalog for the exhibition "Clyfford Still: Thirty-Three Paintings in the Albright-Knox Art Gallery" at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, New York. On view February 24 through March 31, 1966, the exhibition honored Still’s 1964 gift of thirty-one artworks, in addition to the two large paintings previously purchased by the institution. In this statement, Still discusses his discontent with the art world and its resulting influence upon his creative practice. Following his separation from the commercial gallery scene in the early 1950s, Still developed his ideology concerning the ownership and exhibition of his artwork. He writes, "My concern that the pictures be kept together required that they be held permanently and continuously in the Albright-Knox Art Gallery - not permitted to be shipped from the museum to any other gallery or city." This assertion establishes the basis for Still's gift to the institution, as well as the eventual foundation of the Clyfford Still Museum.
