Work Description:
The unpainted areas where bare canvas is left exposed play a vital role in this composition. Still uses the bare canvas in conjunction with primarily black pigment to suggest an abstracted figure through the use of line, highlights, and shadow. Where the bare canvas comes forward at the viewer to function as the form's highlights and other lightly colored areas, the black paint recedes, representing shadows and depth. Still's emphasis on the bare canvas crates an inherent tension between positive and negative space. Pops of green, orange, red, and yellow all infuse the scene with movement and liveliness. Two yellow dashes, one on top of the other suggest eyes at the top left, and two cylindrical forms at the bottom left edge might represent fingers resting on the figure's lap.
