Work Description:
This painting depicts the construction of Grand Coulee Dam on the Columbia River west of Spokane, Washington and near the town of Nespelem, where Still spent his summers in 1936 and 1937. The composition is dominated by cool blues, greens and purples, with the dam on the left and the river continuing down across the canvas below center off to the right. Two figures are shown in the bottom left of the work, overlooking the construction site below them and the landscape beyond. A road is visible zig-zagging down the hills in the distance, on which multiple cars and trucks travel to and from the site. A boat can be seen on the river below near the far shoreline. Still's handling of the paint on the hills in the background recalls Cezanne's "Mont Saints-Victoire" painting series, in which small geometric areas of paint are organized to flatten the picture plane and emphasize the work's two-dimensionality.
