Work Description:
This black and white photograph depicts an installation view of the exhibition “15 Americans” at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. PH-117 (1949, left) and PH-99 (1948-49, right) line the wall. A typed notation on transparent paper documents information concerning the paintings' titles, materials, provenance, measurements, and exhibition and publication histories. On view April 9 through July 27, 1952, the group exhibition featured a diverse range of representational and abstract artworks by fifteen American painters and sculptors. Curator Dorothy Miller arranged for the presentation of multiple compositions by these artists, which served as a departure from typical contemporary art surveys wherein one artwork represented each artist. Still exhibited seven paintings in a gallery space exclusively dedicated to his artwork alone.
