This file contains correspondence between the directors of the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington DC and Clyfford and Patricia Still. The first object is a 1960 letter from Director Hermann Williams to the Albright-Knox gallery trying to contact Still trying to find Still's dealer to purchase an oil painting for the Corcoran Biennials. Diane Still responds with a strongly worded letter that Williams does not understand "the facts of life in the art world" and that her father has no dealer and no interest in prizes. Williams responds to tell Diane Still that it is up to artists to raise the standards for quality exhibitions by submitting their work. In 1966 Curator James Harithas contacts Still for help with a project for photographer Yousuf Karsh, but the Stills do not respond. In 1967 Elenor Green tells the Stills that she appreciated meeting them, and Still tells Green that they will meet again at the Corcoran Gallery a few weeks later. Green tells Still that she appreciates their meetings and agrees with him that the record of the 1940s and 1950s must be recorded accurately and without bias. Still and Green coordinate meeting, Still reminds Green that the dating of the 1940s and 1950s was intentional and calculated, in response Green sends the Al Held catalog for the 1968 show at the Corcoran as it pertains to Still's concerns. Still tells Green that his works are not readily made for exhibition and she should postpone their meeting. Green understands, but hopes Still will show some pieces at the Corcoran in the future. Later, Green writes Still in appreciation of seeing his paintings and hopes to have lunch soon, she also mentions that canvas #3 1951 from the Betty Parsons is on display at the National Collection of Fine Arts. in 1968 Eleanor Green resigns from the Corcoran gallery, but hopes to work with Still on a publication correcting the dates of works in the 1940s and 1950s, but Still declines due to his contentious relationship with Mark Rothko. The Corcoran Gallery sends their May 1970 notes. There are a number of 1971 articles about the Corcoran, specifically about Vincent Melzac's rise to director of the museum. Melzac's catalog is sent to Still, which includes Still's Indian Red and Black, 1946, reproduced with the forward to the catalog. In 1972 Patricia Still requests a meeting between Still and Melzac, and Melzac agrees. Melzac give Still some advice for estate planning for taxation purposes. Still and Melzac continually make arrangements to meet. Still writes a check for $7500 to the Corcoran Gallery to support the gallery in lieu of donating a painting, despite the fact Melzac wrote that the Corcoran Gallery would follow all of Still's requests for the painting and its display. Melzac also proposes writing a book or catalog for Still's lithographs, of which Still is willing to meet and discuss, but Melzac postpones writing the catalog after their meeting. Finally, due to controversy at the Corcoran, Melzac decides to resign from the gallery.
