This black and white photograph depicts an installation view of Peggy Guggenheim’s “Autumn Salon” at the Art of This Century Gallery in New York. In the background, Clyfford Still's PH-314 (1945) hangs between two unidentified paintings by Leon Polk Smith (left, cropped) and Stanley William Hayter (right). Adjacent to an unidentified sculpture by David Hare, a portion of Peter Busa's "The Desert" (1944, cropped) appears in the left foreground. On view October 6 through October 29, 1945, the group exhibition featured twenty-nine artists, including leading Abstract Expressionists Willem de Kooning, Robert Motherwell, Jackson Pollock, and Mark Rothko. The presentation of PH-314 marked Still’s first time exhibiting his artwork in New York.
