This black and white photograph depicts an installation view of the Surrealist Gallery within Peggy Guggenheim's Art of This Century Gallery in New York. Designed by architect Frederick Kiesler, the Art of This Century Gallery featured four distinct exhibition spaces: the Abstract Gallery, the Surrealist Gallery, the Kinetic Gallery, and the Daylight Gallery. Guggenheim's temporary commercial exhibitions, including those of Still and his contemporaries, took place in the Daylight Gallery, while artworks from her private collection were permanently displayed within the three remaining specially-designed environments. In the dimly lit Surrealist Gallery, flexible mounts projected paintings outward from concave walls. Photographed during Still's participation in the "Autumn Salon" of 1945, this installation view documents a number of Dada and Surrealist artworks within Guggenheim's collection.
