Work Description:

This color slide features an installation view of the inaugural exhibition at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C. On the left, Still appears with the first chief curator of the museum, Charles Millard. PH-847 (1953) hangs on the front-facing wall in the background, while PH-391 (1960, cropped) is on display to the right. On view October 4, 1974 through September 15, 1975, the exhibition featured 900 highlights from the art collection of Joseph H. Hirshhorn, who endowed approximately 6,000 modern and contemporary paintings, drawings, and sculptures to the United States government with the Smithsonian Institution acting as administrator. Prior to the opening of the museum, Still gifted three paintings, including PH-391, to accompany the six artworks purchased for the collection by Hirshhorn. A private collector now retains ownership of PH-847.
