Work Description:

This color slide depicts an installation view of the exhibition “American Art at Mid-Century 1” at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. David Smith's sculpture "The Banquet" (1951) appears in the foreground. James Brooks's "Number 42 - 1950" (1950, cropped) extends from the left edge of the frame, followed by Richard Pousette-Dart's "Symphony No. 1, The Transcendental" (1942) and Arshile Gorky's "The Orators" (1947, cropped) on the far right. On view October 28, 1973 through January 6, 1974, the exhibition featured twenty-six paintings and sculptures by twenty-three American artists. The presentation of these works demonstrated the diverse artistic styles of post-World War II New York.
