This color slide depicts an installation view of the exhibition “American Art at Mid-Century 1” at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. Willem de Kooning's "Theatrical backdrop, 'Labyrinth'" (1946) occupies a partition in the center of the gallery. Mark Rothko's "Untitled" (1954, cropped) extends from the left edge of the frame, followed by James Brooks's "Number 42 - 1950" (1950, cropped). In the background, William Baziotes's "Serpentine" (1961) appears beyond David Smith's sculpture "The Banquet" (1951). Proceeding clockwise from the far back wall, Bradley Walker Tomlin's "No. 7" (1950, cropped), Jackson Pollock's "Blue Poles" (1952, cropped), Robert Motherwell's "Jour la Maison, Nuit la Rue" (1957, cropped), and Milton Resnick’s “Mound” (1961, cropped) line the gallery's right side. On view October 28, 1973 through January 6, 1974, the exhibition featured twenty-six paintings and sculptures by twenty-three American artists. The presentation of these works demonstrated the diverse artistic styles of post-World War II New York.
