Work Description:
|
This file contain correspondence between Helen Stanley and Clyfford Still. It starts with Stanley contacting Still in 1964 about Still's exhibition at the Philadelphia Institute of Contemporary Art and the correspondence she has between Still and Phil Ferris, and Still appreciates Stanley's letter. Throughout the correspondence they discuss a Still painting that Stanley owns (PH-384), loaning the work to the Oakland Museum, selling it to David McKee for $60,000 (who would sell it through his gallery), and the $3,000 Still receives from the sale (artists get 5% royalties of sales). Still and Stanley also discuss their friendship, family updates, and Still sends Stanley a copy of the Metropolitan Museum of Art catalog. Still also mentions Stanley possessed a sketch of a "red ship" and a "portrait of a Chinese girl" created by Clyfford Still, which Still requests to be returned to him in 1974. Also includes some sketches and collages likely created by Stanley.
