Work Description:
This file contains correspondence between Philippe de Montebello and Clyfford and Patricia Still. The topics in the correspondence include de Montebello writing Still about the death of Thomas Hess and planning materials for the 1979 Clyfford Still retrospective at the Metropolitan Museum of Art of which de Montebello reduces the number of works to 75-85, which Still thinks is too few. Still also discusses the timing and logistics of the retrospective. Still attempts to cancel or delay the retrospective, but the exhibition is held in November of 1979. There are conversations on Still's ailing health and the impact that may have on the exhibition. There are conversations on the planning of the catalog for the retrospective. There are articles about Philippe de Montebello as the director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. There are further conversations about Still's heath after the exhibition concludes. Photographs of the Clyfford Still banner at the Metropolitan Museum of Art are sent to Still. Still writes in appreciation of the show and there are indications that Mr. Newhouse purchased a painting from the show, Mr Otten also asks to purchase a work from the show for $50,000, but Still says that he cannot part with another work. Montebello sends condolences upon Still's death. In 1982 Patricia Still discusses the potential of creating a Still room at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, of which Montebello is intrigued to create. In 1987, Patricia Still writes in appreciation for the acknowledgement of ten paintings the Metropolitan Museum of Art received from her, but she does send information of the incorrect statements they included in their article. There are clippings of news articles about the operations of the Metropolitan Museum of Art from the early 1990s. In 1992, there are conversations about the possibility of having a show of Still's pastels. In 1996 Patricia Still writes to Montebello about damage to PH-114 in the Metropolitan collection.
