This file contains correspondence between Thomas Hess, Consultative Chairman of 20th-Century Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Clyfford Still. The file starts with a February 1978 letter from Hess notifying Still that Geldzahler has moved on from the Metropolitan Museum and Hess is taking over his position and is interested in doing a Clyfford Still retrospective. Still appreciates the letter and hopes to meet with Hess next month about a retrospective. After meeting in person, Hess writes to Still about how much he enjoyed lunch and walking through the galleries with Still and Sandra Still, Hess suggestions the retrospective to be of 150 works ranging from the 1920s to 1970s, most of which from the artist's holdings, and some documentary materials. Still is enthusiastic about the retrospective set for November 1979 and has selected 248 works for the show that he hopes Hess will help him cut down to 150. In late March 1978, Hess thanks Still for the slides, Hess asks where Still would like to borrow 25-30 loans for the show and understands not traveling the exhibition, but suggests sending it to two museums in Europe. There are a list of slides to Hess. Still responds to Hess saying that there is no reason to borrow from other institutions unless there are specific works he'd like to borrow, and Still is open to a European travel of the retrospective, but it would be at the cost of the Metropolitan Museum. Hess coordinates traveling to New Windsor. In April 1978, Hess writes about the catalog for the retrospective and some details on the show including spaces and timing. Still is happy with all of the planning thus far with the show and starts making plans to meet with Philippe de Montebello. In May and June of 1978, Still and Hess continue to write about selecting works for the retrospective. In July 1978, Still writes in frustration about Hess's review of Still's work at the Marlborough Gallery in 1969 and questions whether Hess is the right person to manage the show, Still tries to postpone the show due to these issues and storage issues at the Metropolitan Museum. In July 1978, Sandra Still Campbell write Still that she will photograph the two paintings currently at the Metropolitan Museum and preparing to help with the exhibition in photographing and documenting the exhibition. Upon Hess's death in 1978 Still sends condolences to Hess's daughter and the Stills are invited to the memorial. Finally there is a list of the 266 slides sent to the Metropolitan Museum and notes about Still and Hess's meetings.
