This file contains articles written by Clement Greenberg, correspondence between Clyfford Still and Greenberg, and articles about Greenberg. It opens with a copy of Partisan Review from Spring 1955 that included Greenberg's article "'American-Type' Painting." This article cause Clyfford Still to write Greenberg that it caused great jealousy in Barnett Newman and that as a result, Still feels Greenberg is an honest man. Still continues to tell Greenberg that he should consult Still before writing about his work and to check the statements of Still's contemporaries of which Still does not respect. Greenberg responds by telling Still that he is disappointed that Newman is upset, because Greenberg and Newman are friends. Greenberg continues to tell Still that he did not get his information about Still from Still's contemporaries like Newman or Pollock, but it comes from Greenberg's own experience with Still's work, but Greenberg does point out that Newman's bitterness comes from his unwillingness to "sweat it out with his art" because nothing good comes from "artists concerned to sweat it out before getting recognition." Still responds by saying it was a blunder to permit his work to the public domain, but it is now Still's moral responsibility to be articulate in the defense of his work and their implications on the scene. Later in 1955, Greenberg reaches out to Still for a reproduction of one of his paintings at Ossorio's or the MoMA for an article in Forum. In 1956, Still writes a note of appreciation of Greensburg's review of Herbert Read's work, as a result, Still invites Greenberg to see some of Still's canvases in his studio. In late 1957, Still writes to Greenberg that his article in Time has quotations towards Still's work and Still founds it to be a courageous statement. Greenberg appreciates it and hopes to meet in person. In late 1958, Still tells Greenberg he does not want any reproductions of his work until a proper series of work can be executed and is not interested in working with a gallery. There are photocopies of Greenberg's articles from 1959, which causes the Stills to write that there is something rotten in Newman and Greenbergs souls. There are a series of articles about Greenberg and his role with the estate of David Smith. Finally, there is an undated note about Greenberg and his faults with Still's work.
