Work Description:
This file contains correspondence between the directors of the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington DC and Clyfford and Patricia Still. The first object is a 1973 Washington Post article about the new director of the Corcoran Gallery, Roy Slade. Then in 1974 a Washington Post article notes Walter Hopps a former curator and director of the Corcoran Gallery from 1970 (presumably filling the position between Melzac and Slade). The Stills recieve 1974 and 1975 calendars for the National Collection of Fine Arts and the 1975 Corcoran Gallery calendar. In 1975 Slade writes Still in appreciation for Still's attendance of the Lee Krasner opening and hopes to meet and discuss art with Still. Still agrees to meet with Slade. The Corcoran gallery notified their members that they would reduce their mailings in a cost-saving measure. In 1976 Slade writes Still in appreciation of their meeting and in hopes of continuing conversations. Later, Slade discusses hopes for a group of Still paintings to be shown at the Corcoran and Still comes to Washington to view the galleries and consider their ability to support a Still show. By August 1976, Slade is hopeful that the Corcoran will acquire a few Stills for the gallery in the form of a gift. Still and Slade discuss the prospects of paintings in the Corcoran, but are delayed due to a surgery needed by Slade, and Still suspects the surgery is a falsehood to delay their conversation. By 1977, Slade and Still are discussing a loan of Still's paintings to the Corcoran Gallery, though an event for President Carter at the Corcoran makes Still nervous about any involvement with the gallery. In 1977 Slade takes a position of President of the Cranbrook Academy of Art so he can focus on his paintings. Still gives best wishes, but Slade's departure makes Still more nervous about working with the Corcoran. In 1978, Gilbert Kinney, the Chief Executive Officer of the Corcoran, suggests Still loans his 1974 black and white painting from the suggestion of their curator Jane Livingston. Upon meeting with Livingston, Still feels that the Corcoran cannot handle a Still in their current condition. Kinney is disappointed, but hopes conversations can start again. The file ends with Still inviting Kinney to New Windsor, though there is not followup letters.
