This file contains clippings about Thomas Hoving as director or the Metropolitan Museum of Art and correspondence between Hoving and Clyfford Still. It opens with a Newsweek article about the first year of Hoving's time as director of the Metropolitan Museum. Next is a telegram notifying Still that the opening of "New York Painting and Sculpture: 1940-1970" open has been postponed. In October 1972, Still writes Hoving about two articles from the New York Times and Newsweek about the ethhics of some sales the Metropolitan Museum has made which upset Still because it miss identifies Still as someone who received favors and gave for the Metropolitan Museum through the gift of paintings. In November 1972, Hoving writes Still thanking Still's support in the accusations against the museum. There are additional articles from 1974 from the New York Times about John Hess's writings about the scandals surrounding the Metropolitan Museum. In May 1976, Still writes Hoving again in frustration of the use of Still's name in the press and Still would like to meet Hoving to correct the record about dealers and galleries in New York, Hoving responds in hopes of meeting with Still. Finally, there is a 1976 article about Hoving using the Metropolitan Museum selling reproductions to support building new wings to the Met.
