Work Description:
This file contains correspondence between John Stephan and Clyfford and Patricia Still. It opens with a letter from Clyfford Still to Stephan about Stephan's trip to Hawaii and Still's complaints about the art scene in New York and further north. Stephan writes Still that both of his parents have passed away, so he has been busy in Chicago, but the Stephans have settled into Newport. Still sends his condolences and tells Stephan that he is struggling to paint at the time in 1965. Both Still and Stephan discuss their dislike for the jazz crowd. In 1967, Stephan tells Still that Ineko and he drove up to Buffalo to see Still's paintings. Stephan and Still make plans to meet one another soon, eventually making plans to see the cherry blossoms in Washington DC. In 1968 Stephan writes Still about how the paintings overwhelmed him and how Still has the evidence that he created contemporary spatial concepts. Still appreciates that John understands the importance of Still's work. Still writes Stephan about how Corcoran gallery curator Eleanor Green visited Still to try to show his work, and Still recommended she shows Stephan's instead as Still has no interest in working with the Corcoran. Stephan occasionally sends photographs of the ocean winter in Newport. Stephan updates Still on his works in various galleries and how he has now become reclusive from galleries and museums. Still is pleased that Stephan is still working, and says Stephan is correct in his complaints about the New York art scene and museums. Stephan invites Still to his show at the DeCordova Museum in Lincoln Massachusetts and also sends the catalog for the show. Finally there is an invitation to see Stephan's work at the Rhode Island School of Design.
