This file contains materials related to the Museum of Modern Art 1952 show "15 Americans" featuring 15 American painters in the abstract expressionism movement including Baziotes, Corbett, Dickinson, Ferber, Glasco, Katzman, Kiesler, Kriesberg, Lippold, Pollock, Rose, Rothko, Still, Tomlin, and Wilfred. This file starts with a ticket stub for a Hockey Game at Madison Square Garden, then there is an invitation to 15 Americans at the Museum of Modern Art. Next is a photocopy of a New York Times article from June 30, 1952 titled "Metropolitan Hit By 7 Modernist" about the Irascible letter signed by Barnett Newman, Clyfford Still, Ad Reinhardt, Mark Rothko, Adolph Gottlieb, Herbert Farber, and Robert Motherwell is discussed in the paper. A New York Time photocopy clipping from May 4, 1952 announcing that Fifteen Americans show, specifically mentioning the scale of Still's paintings. There is a photocopy of a telegram from Newman from December 27, 1952 saying "Thanks Clyff for letting Analee and me share in the glory of your, not the, human spirit." There is a letter from San Francis from Paris in May 7, 1952 about Still's influence on George Abend and Walter Kuhlman especially from Stills "large black painting with a golden ribbon of yellow running irregularly from top to bottom." There is a letter from Thomas Hess from May 2, 1952 about having seen 15 Americans twice and the impact of the black painting in the show. There is a copy of a letter from Sam Francis from March 18, 1952 telling Still that there were two Still painting in a publication about artists devoted to American art and how it has piqued interest in Europe of Abstract Expressionism. There is a copy of hte Open Letter to Ronland L.Redmond of the Metropolitan Museum of Art about their rejection of Abstract Expressionism. There is a photocopy of an article about he Wold of Art "Art Styles Clash and Clang in Show of 'Fifteen American's by A. L Chanin in the Compass April 13, 1952. There is a Spokesman Review of Fifteen Americans by Elenor Shaw. There is a second copy of the Hess letter to Still from May 2, 1952 and a second copy of the Sam Francis letter from March 18, 1952. There is a copy of the "15 Americans" catalog from the Museum of Modern Art with an inscription to Patrica Still from Clyfford Still. The file includes a copy of Still's letter to Howard Devree about his poor reception of 15 Americans in the New York Times. Finally there are som reviews from the Art Digest from May 1, 1952 of 15 Americans written by James Fitzsimmons.
