Work Description:

This file contains correspondence between Clyfford Still and Kenneth Sawyer. It starts with a letter from Still to Sawyer about his plans for Buffalo and the Albright-Knox catalog introduction and to notify Still that there is a book with inaccurate information on abstract expressionism as Still wants to make sure the record is accurate from Sawyer. Sawyer promises to be accurate and truthful in his writing and will avoid the pitfalls of the inaccurate writing on the Abstract Expressionism timeline. There is continuing correspondence about the Albirght-Knox catalog. A copy of the Spring 1959 Evergreen Review is included where Sawyer contributed an article "The Importance of a Wall: Galleries" of which Still appreciates. Sawyer continually praises Still for his bravery in his comments about the art world and his challenges against the "false" historical record on abstract expressionism, especially surrounding the Albright-Knox show. Still continually discusses the "false reference" especially as it pertains to Barnett Newman and the Museum of Modern Art. Later, Patricia Still notifies Sawyer that Sawyer has no interest in learning the truth about Still's career or art and Clyfford Still no longer respects Sawyer. Sawyer writes an article on the Albright-Knox show for the Baltimore Sun, which Still appreciate, Sawyer respects Patricia's letter and promises to work harder to understand the "truth." Still respects Sawyer again because he took Patricia's criticism well. Sawyer discusses the poor reporting of Israel Rosen on Clyfford Still and mentions the possibility of other exhibitions that Still is not interested in. Still and Sawyer attempt to connect multiple times on Still's career and to improve Sawyer's understanding of the work. Finally, Still's 1963 "An Open Letter to an Art Critic" in Artforum is included in the file.
