Work Description:
|
This file contains correspondence between the Curator's office at Kunsthalle Basel (primarily from Arnold Rudlinger) and Clyfford Still. The file opens with Rudlinger thanking Still for selling a black and white painting (PH-822) to the Basel Art Museum as it will be the first European Institute to receive a Still, Rudlinger had an accident that prevents him from going to Buffalo to see Still's work, but he appreciates Still's concern with Rudlinger's health. Still is pleased that Basel is brave enough to buy a Still and sends information on its shipping and handling. Kunsthalle Basel sends information on the payment of the painting ($10,000). In an unsent letter from Still, Clyfford Still discusses the history of the Subjects of the Artist school, the Museum of Modern Art and their fabrications, and the reality of Mark Rothko (Still sends an edited letter about these topics and discusses Newman in it as well). Still requests a photograph of the painting acquired by the Basel Museum of Art. Still and Rudlinger discuss the Albright-Knox 1959 show and Rudlinger requests a catalog which Still sends. Still and Rudlinger discuss doing a larger exhibition at Kunsthalle Basel, Still is interested because of his respect for the respect he has of the museum in Basel and his respect of Rudlinger. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the show is moved to 1968, and later to 1969. Rudlinger passes away in 1968 and is replaced by Peter Althaus as Curator - Kunsthalle Basel no longer believes they can support a Still exhibition as planned with Rudlinger. Still sends his condolences upon the death of Rudlinger.
