Work Description:
|
This file contains correspondence between Clyfford Still and the Whitney Museum, specifically with Associate Director Lloyd Goodrich and Director Herman More. It also includes museum pamphlets and exhibition announcements at the Whitney Museum in New York City. The file begins with Clyfford Still contacts the Whitney because Betty Parsons tells him that they want to view Still's work and possibly getting a piece for an exhibition, but Still is hesitant to do cross-selection exhibitions. Goodrich contacts Still to see his work for an exhibition, but Still refuses to loan any works to group shows. In 1961 the Whitney is producing 1957-K in their catalog and asks Still to verify information. Still is invited to various exhibition openings at the Whitney. The Whitney confirms that 1957-K entered their permanent collection in 1969. The Whitney creates 1957-K into a postcard which Sandra Still sends to Clyfford. The museum shows the painting 1957-K in their exhibition "The Structure of Color" but misrepresents Still as "represented by Marlborough Gallery" which frustrates Still. The Whitney sends materials on events at the museum such as a filmmakers series. They share schematics to Still for exhibitions showing Still's work such as their 1972 show with a 1945 painting (PH-141). Still contacts the Whitney about doing restoration work on his paintings for them as they are drying out. Sandra contacts Clyfford about a negative experience with the shows at the Whitney, but she is always complimentary of his works. Sandra Still contacts the museum about incorrect display of slides of Still's work at the Whitney Museum. The Whitney continues to contact Still about exhibitions and notify Still when his paintings go on display.
