This black and white photograph depicts a view of the exhibition opening of "Clyfford Still: The Buffalo and San Francisco Collections" at Kunsthalle Basel in Switzerland. Photographed through a doorway, a crowd of viewers stands before PH-174 (1960), which hangs on the opposite side of the gallery. On view January 26 through March 22, 1992, the exhibition featured a selection of thirty-five paintings from the collections of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Following its commencement in Basel, the exhibition traveled to Madrid, Amsterdam, Buffalo, and San Francisco. The tour constituted the first major presentation of Still’s oeuvre outside of the United States.
