This typed document was compiled from quotations that appeared in the preface to the catalog for the exhibition "Clyfford Still" at the University of Pennsylvania's Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia. Written by Director Ti-Grace Sharpless, the essay incorporated several direct quotations by Still in order to better illustrate his ideologies regarding the social responsibility of artists. On view October 18 through December 15, 1963, the exhibition inaugurated the university's original contemporary gallery space within the Furness Library.
