Work Description:
This typed manuscript documents the artist's recollections of the exhibition "Paintings by Clyfford Still" at the Metart Gallery in San Francisco, on view June 17 through July 14, 1950. Still recounts the complicated politics among the students associated with the gallery, as well as the cynical reactions of Douglas MacAgy and Ad Reinhardt. Still also remarks on the lack of critical response to his artwork, and explains his decision to assign the task of reviewing the exhibition to one of his students, Hubert Crehan. The artist asserts that Crehan was largely responsible for the eventual corruption of the student-run gallery, which closed permanently following the conclusion of the exhibition.
