This typed manuscript mirrors the artist's statement published in the catalog for the exhibition “Paintings by Clyfford Still” at the Albright Art Gallery in Buffalo, New York. Written in the form of a letter to Director Gordon Smith, the statement outlines Still’s ideologies concerning the social responsibilities of artists. Still expresses his disregard for the art world’s institutionalized glorification of aesthetics and utilitarian symbolism. The artist contends that his work transcends traditional cultural and academic associations; rather, his paintings serve as an extension of his spirit. He writes, “The work itself, whether thought of as image of idea, as revelation, or as a manifest of meaning, could not have existed without a profound concern to achieve a purpose beyond vanity, ambition, or remembrance, for a man’s term of life.” On view November 5 through December 13, 1959, the retrospective featured seventy-two artworks curated by Still himself.
