This typed manuscript mirrors Clyfford Still's "An Open Letter to an Art Critic", which was published in Artforum Magazine's December 1963 issue. Still's letter serves as a response to art critic Kenneth Sawyer's article "The Importance of a Wall: Galleries", Evergreen Review, Spring 1959. Published in conjunction with his solo exhibition at the University of Pennsylvania's Institute of Contemporary Art, Still's scathing commentary reflects his negative perceptions regarding the authority of traditional art institutions and the apparent exploitation of artists by commercial galleries in New York.
