Work Description:
|
Originally published with Hubert Crehan’s article “Is there a California School?” in the January 1956 issue of ARTnews, this black and white photographic reproduction depicts an installation view of the exhibition “Paintings by Clyfford Still” at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco. From left to right, PH-189 (1946), PH-83 (1946), and PH-135 (1945) line the gallery's walls. A typed notation on transparent paper documents information concerning the paintings' titles, materials, provenance, measurements, and exhibition and publication histories. On view July 2 through August 3, 1947, the one-person exhibition featured thirteen artworks, six of which were completed during Still’s teaching term at the California School of Fine Arts. The presentation of these radical abstractions proved to be highly influential among other artists working in the Bay Area at the time.
