A typewritten title page accompanies this excerpted preface from the catalog for the exhibition "Clyfford Still" at the University of Pennsylvania's Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia. Director Ti-Grace Sharpless's essay offers a philosophical interpretation of the creative practice. In her discussion relating to the social responsibility of art-making, Sharpless profiles Still as an artist who views his paintings as an extension of the self. Direct quotations from the artist further illustrate Still's complex ideologies. On view October 18 through December 15, 1963, the exhibition of thirty-two paintings inaugurated the university's original contemporary gallery space in the Furness Library.
