Work Description:
|
This black and white photograph features an installation view from the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. On the left, a viewer sits on a bench before Hans Hofmann's "Veluti in Speculum" (1962). Clyfford Still’s PH-384 (1946) hangs to the right of a doorway, while Jackson Pollock’s “Autumn Rhythm (Number 30)” (1950, cropped) lines the wall to the far right. In the background, Chaim Soutine's "Portrait of Madeleine Castaing" (ca. 1929), André Derain's "Lucien Gilbert" (ca. 1905), and Auguste Rodin's sculpture "Adam" (1910, cropped) appear from left to right within a separate gallery of twentieth-century European art. The museum acquired PH-384 from a private collection through the George A. Hearn Fund and Arthur Hoppock Hearn Fund in 1977.
