Work Description:

This black and white photograph depicts an installation view of “Third Annual Exhibition of Painting” at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco. From left to right, William Baziotes’s “Moon Forms” (1947), an unidentified painting, Adolph Gottlieb’s “Pictograph” (ca. 1947), Irene Rice Pereira’s “Duograph” (ca. 1947), and two unidentified paintings hang in the gallery. A mobile by Alexander Calder is suspended from the ceiling. On view December 1, 1948 through January 16, 1949, the presentation of 150 figurative and abstract paintings served as a cross-section of contemporary art in postwar America. Curator Jermayne MacAgy invited 115 artists to participate in the exhibition, while a jury selected the remaining artworks from a group of Bay Area painters.
