Work Description:
This black and white photograph depicts an installation view of “First Exhibition, Paintings: Clyfford Still” at Peggy Guggenheim’s Art of This Century Gallery in New York, on view February 12 through March 7, 1946. Guggenheim sits at her desk and poses for the camera. PH-515 (1945) is situated on an easel behind the gallerist, and PH-233 (1945) hangs between two doorways. From left to right, PH-159 (1944-45, cropped), PH-254 (1945, cropped), PH-315 (1945, cropped), and PH-193 (1945, cropped) line the walls in the background. Typed notations offer information concerning the artworks’ materials, provenance, and measurements. As Still’s first one-person show in New York, the exhibition featured twelve paintings, as well as a portfolio of twenty-three works on paper. Mark Rothko wrote the influential text for the exhibition’s brochure, while Guggenheim purportedly assigned mythological titles to each artwork at the suggestion of Surrealist André Breton.
