Work Description:
|
This black and white photograph depicts an installation view of “First Exhibition, Paintings: Clyfford Still” at Peggy Guggenheim’s Art of This Century Gallery in New York, on view February 12 through March 7, 1946. Accompanied by two dogs, Guggenheim sits in a chair before PH-739 (1944), a painting that she eventually acquired for her collection. A typed notation on transparent paper documents the dates of the exhibition. As Still’s first one-person show in New York, the exhibition featured twelve paintings, as well as a portfolio of twenty-three works on paper. Mark Rothko wrote the influential text for the exhibition’s brochure, while Guggenheim purportedly assigned mythological titles to each artwork at the suggestion of Surrealist André Breton.
