This black and white photograph depicts an installation view of “First Exhibition, Paintings: Clyfford Still” at Peggy Guggenheim’s Art of This Century Gallery in New York, on view February 12 through March 7, 1946. PH-233 (1945) appears on the far left. PH-254 (1945, cropped) hangs on the front-facing wall in the background. Proceeding clockwise, PH-197 (1944, cropped), PH-315 (1945, cropped), PH-193 (1945, cropped), PH-739 (1944, cropped), and PH-298 (1942, cropped) line the wall to the right. As Still’s first one-person show in New York, the exhibition featured twelve paintings, as well as a portfolio of twenty-three works on paper. Mark Rothko wrote the influential text for the exhibition’s brochure, while Guggenheim purportedly assigned mythological titles to each artwork at the suggestion of Surrealist André Breton.
