This black and white photograph depicts an installation view of the exhibition “Clyfford Still” at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in California. In the background, PH-323 (1934) appears through a doorway. PH-371 (1947, cropped) hangs to the left of the doorway, and PH-446 (1947) is situated to the right. On view January 8 through April 20, 1976, the exhibition featured thirty-three paintings. Still loaned three artworks from his personal collection to accompany his 1975 gift of twenty-eight paintings, in addition to the two previously owned by the museum. Following the acquisition of Still’s gift, the institution constructed a permanent gallery to house the entire collection, while movable walls allowed for the exhibition of select artworks.
