Work Description:
|
This black and white photograph depicts an installation view of the exhibition “Clyfford Still” at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in California. PH-969 (1954, cropped) extends from the left of the frame. Proceeding clockwise, PH-261 (1962) and PH-393 (1956) line the wall to the right. On view January 8 through April 20, 1976, the exhibition featured thirty-three paintings. Still loaned three artworks from his personal collection (including PH-393) to accompany his 1975 gift of twenty-eight paintings, in addition to the two previously owned by the museum. Following the acquisition of Still’s gift, the institution constructed a permanent gallery to house the entire collection, while movable walls allowed for the exhibition of select artworks.
