This black and white photograph features an installation view of the exhibition “Clyfford Still” at the Betty Parsons Gallery in New York. On the left, PH-329 (1944) hangs on the wall beyond an exhibit case. PH-135 (1945) appears to the right. On view April 17 through April 26, 1947, the exhibition was Still’s first solo presentation at the gallery. Prior to its installation, Still wrote to Parsons to declare his decision to eliminate titles and “extraneous statements” when exhibiting his artwork. Parsons complied with the artist’s wishes, and the fifteen paintings were displayed without titles.
