Work Description:
The following three tracks are recordings of phone calls made between Clyfford, Patricia, and Sandra Still during a 5-day business trip Clyfford took to New York City from January 16th - 20th, 1978. ||||| 23-A-1: 1978-01-17 - #2. The main topics of the call are Clyfford’s lunch meeting with Gibson at the Carlyle Hotel that day, and Clyfford’s dinner with Jon Schueler the previous night. The Stills also discuss: Sandra’s written and audio-recorded notes; valuation of Clyfford’s art; the snowy weather; artistic devices; and art education. 20:00. ||||| 23-A-2: c. 1978-01-17 - #5. The main topic of the call is to arrange details for an unidentified person or transportation company to meet Clyfford at the train station on his way out of New York on Friday 1/20. The Stills also discuss: the lunch meeting Clyfford had with publisher Roger Straus (Clyfford gave him diary notes, and Straus gave Clyfford a copy of Susan Sontag’s 1977 book On Photography), and Clyfford and Sandra’s visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. 03:31. ||||| 23-A-3: 1978-01-18 - #3. The call consists of Clyfford arranging a lunch meeting near Sandra's apartment with an unidentified person (probably Mala Breuer). 01:36. ||||| 23-A-4: 1978-01-20 - #7. The main topic of the call is Clyfford’s meeting the previous day with publisher Roger Straus. Straus had said he wanted to help Clyfford write an autobiography or book of essays written by Clyfford and based on his diary notes. The Stills also discuss the heavy snowstorm and Clyfford being unable to leave New York due to the weather. 07:30. ||||| 23-A-5: 1978-03-07 - Phone call, Clyfford and Sandra Still call Patricia Still to describe their lunch meeting with Thomas Hess, in which Hess first proposes the 1979 Metropolitan Museum of Art exhibition, "Clyfford Still", as a possibility. Clyfford describes the details he learned: about 150 of Still's pictures would be shown alone in as many as 10 gallery rooms; Douglas Dillon and Met director Philippe de Montebello were very enthusiastic; funding might include corporate sponsorship; and Clyfford would select slides to show to Hess to help curate the show. This is a recording of Clyfford and Sandra’s side of the phone call; it corresponds with Patricia’s side of the phone call in 16-B-1. Both tracks have significant noise growing toward the end, but 16-B-1 is much clearer during the beginning of the call. 15:06. ||||| 23-A-6: c. 1973 - Conversation in Spanish between several people speaking Spanish. 14:09. ||||| 23-B-1: c. 1973 - Audio of a person whistling, with ambient room noise from the television. 00:28. ||||| 23-B-2: c. 1973 - Re-recording of a mass-produced French language practice lesson: "French I - Numbers - Alphabet, Lesson 3 &4". 51:55. ||||| 23-B-3: c. 1973 - Spoken conversation between several people practicing Spanish phrases. 09:46.
