Work Description:
|
This black and white photograph depicts the gardens at the Yaddo artist's colony in Saratoga Springs, New York, where Clyfford Still spent the summers of 1934 and 1935. Lush vegetation surrounds an ornamental ceramic arbor. The view through the arbor's columns reveals a pathway to the property's elaborate fountain and sculpture garden. The structure's architrave features an inscription that reads: "ST KT", which represents the initials of the organization's founders, Spencer Trask (1844-1909) and Katrina Trask (1853-1922). The Trask family's vacations in Italy inspired the garden's classical architecture.
