Work Description:
|
This black and white photograph depicts a polo match at the Aiken Polo Club in Aiken, South Carolina. Clyfford Still attended the match with Seymour H. Knox, a financier and arts patron associated with the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, in March of 1966. In the center of the image, a group of five players on horseback races across the field in pursuit of the ball. On the opposing edge of the field, spectators view the match near a row of parked cars. A sign at the base of the barrier in the foreground reads, "Northrup Knox", in reference to Seymour H. Knox's youngest son. As an esteemed polo player like his father, Northrup R. Knox served as a chairman for the United States Polo Association from 1966-1970.
