This contact sheet features two installation views of the exhibition “Clyfford Still” at the Betty Parsons Gallery in New York. In the print on the left, PH-329 (1944, left), PH-135 (1945, center), and PH-300 (1945, cropped, right) line the walls. In the print on the right, PH-329 (1944), PH-135 (1945), and PH-300 (1945), PHX-15 (1945), and PH-285 (1945) hang in the gallery from left to right. On view April 17 through April 26, 1947, the exhibition was Still’s first solo presentation at the gallery. Prior to its installation, Still wrote to Parsons to declare his decision to eliminate titles and “extraneous statements” when exhibiting his artwork. Parsons complied with the artist’s wishes, and the fifteen paintings were displayed without titles.
