Work Description:
In this color portrait, Patricia Garske, Clyfford Still's second wife (m. 1957), poses in the front courtyard at the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco, California. Clyfford Still taught at CSFA (now the San Francisco Art Institute) from 1946-1950. Positioned behind the tiled fountain in the foreground, Garske appears before the structure's Spanish-style arcade. With her right arm resting upon her hip, Garske smiles at the camera. She wears a long skirt, a sweater, and a scarf. The sun casts shadows throughout the scene.
