Work Description:
|
In this black and white portrait, Clyfford Still stands before a supply table in his studio at 48 Cooper Square in New York City. Facing forward, Still looks directly at the camera. With his right hand tucked into the pocket of his slacks, the artist holds a cigarette in his left hand. Photographed in the act of raising the cigarette to his mouth, Still's hand blurs as a result of this motion. He wears glasses, black slacks, and a black sweater over a light-colored shirt. In the background, several canvases lean against the wall with their stretchers positioned outward. A portion of PH-217 (1945) appears among an additional stack of canvases located behind the supply table. On the far right, a curtain partially covers a doorway. Hans Namuth photographed Still in his studio on November 24, 1951.
