In this black and white portrait, Clyfford Still creates a pastel drawing in the studio within his home at 312 Church Street in New Windsor, Maryland. Photographed at an angle, the artist appears in three-quarter view. He wears a painter's smock over his dark clothing, and sports a beard. Standing behind the table that occupies the foreground, Still looks downward in contemplation at the composition before him. An additional drawing rests on the table at Still's right. Several abstracted shapes and lines appear on both artworks. Securing the paper's left edge with his left hand, Still holds a pastel crayon in his right hand. His shadow casts against the wall to his left, partially covering a board that features reference photographs of his paintings. A stretched canvas leans against the wall behind Still.
