This partial black and white portrait features a detail of Clyfford Still from the iconic photograph of "The Irascibles" for "Life" magazine. Still appeared with fourteen additional Abstract Expressionist artists including Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock, Barnett Newman, Robert Motherwell, among others, to protest the lack of modern artists represented in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's exhibition "American Painting Today - 1950." All of the group has been cropped out of the photograph except for Still and a portion of Hedda Sterne, who stands on a table above Still. Still wears glasses and a dark gray suit with a white shirt, vest, and tie. He also sports a mustache. Leaning forward, the artist rests his right arm over his right leg. Positioned between Pollock and Motherwell, Still appeared in the middle row of the original photograph.
