Work Description:
This black and white photograph depicts the construction of the Grand Coulee Dam in Grand Coulee, Washington. The construction of the dam began in 1933 and concluded in 1942. The partially-constructed dam appears at the left. A portion of its unfinished surface reveals its inner structure. Supported by metal scaffolding, two railroad trestles extend from the right edge of the frame toward the dam. Machinery, buildings, and construction materials line the paths at the bottom of the valley. The Columbia River winds through the landscape beyond the dam. A vast mountain range extends into the distance of the background.
