Work Description:
In this black and white group portrait, approximately seventy women and girls pose on the staircase of an unidentified Methodist church. The photograph probably depicts the church's congregation, and Clyfford Still's female relatives may appear among the figures. Most of the women wear elaborate hats with coats over their dresses. The girls and younger women sit on the grass in the front row. While the majority of the women look to the right, some stare directly at the camera. On the far left, a sign affixed to the church's white clapboard siding reads: "METHODIST / A.D. 1900 / CHURCH". A modest arched window appears above the church's frontal wooden doors. A farmhouse and various trees occupy the background of the image.
