Work Description:
In this black and white portrait, a young Clyfford Still poses with a rifle before a flat landscape in Bow Island, Alberta, Canada. He wears a scout's uniform with a broad-rimmed hat and a long coat belted at the waist. The coat features several commemorative patches and pins. With his right knee resting upon the grass, Still bends his left knee to situate himself in a kneeling position. He holds the rifle to his eye and aims the barrel to the left while steadying his arm with his knee. Snow covers the majority of the field in the background.
